Guillermo Cuellar

YES - LIFE IS ART

dreamscape

This exhibit focuses on how the artist, Guillermo Cuellar, used his creative process to access, accept, and address the multiple aspects of his relationship with cancer. It celebrates his love for life and the role that art expression played while facing choices and decisions. This exhibit honors the process, people and events.

“Each person must find his or her own way or path in facing illness or the end of life. I have found that trusting my art making process leads me to deeper awareness, unveils thoughts, helps me illustrate and release emotional experiences, and allows me to express subtle realities.

Yes - Life is Art is a public expression of my gratitude for the gift of life including all the support I’ve received and am still receiving from so many beings here and beyond.”

JOURNEY WITH HORSES

Pegasus

The paintings in this exhibit were done over the past three years, after a trip to Venice where the great bronze horses of the Apocalypse look out over St. Peter’s Square. On my return, echoes of these amazing creatures began to appear mysteriously in my paintings, along with the beginnings of Flood that plagues the great city. Soon, I began to visit local horse farms to see what a horse’s eye or nostril or ear really looks like. Increasingly my fascination grew, and I tapped into memory, dream, and mythology. At the same time, there appeared a world as a horse might see it today—current happenings, the echo of war and migration within the framework of an eye.

Throughout this process I have turned to books on horses—especially in the wild—and the works of favorite artists and poets. Also, I regularly sketch beginning ideas and write about these to better see what I am doing and where going. The show includes some of all these sources as indispensable for the work.
